Professor Benjamin Bader is Chair in International Human Resource Management. He received a PhD with highest distinction from the University of Hamburg, Germany. His research interests include expatriate management and global mobility, international leadership, and diversity management. A special emphasis of his research is on people management in dynamic environments as well as the Future of Work. He has published several refereed journal articles as well as an edited volume on expatriate management. His articles appear in top tier journals such as Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of International Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, among others. Benjamin has guest-edited several Special Issues and is currently serving as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Human Resource Management and previously completed a 3-year term as Associate Editor of the Journal of International Management. He is currently serving as an Editorial Board Member of Human Resource Management.
Having lived and worked in several countries, including the United States, Canada, Denmark, Germany, and the UK, he has first-hand experience of what it means to be an expatriate. This is also reflected in his teaching. Besides teaching at 缅北禁地, he has been invited as a visiting professor or external lecturer at universities around the world, including Simon Fraser University (Canada) and Handelshochschule Leipzig (HHL, Germany). In 2016 he received the best teaching award from Leuphana University Lüneburg for a post-graduate seminar. In 缅北禁地, he was nominated for the prestigious The Education Awards 2019-2020 and shortlisted, among two other colleagues, in the Outstanding Contribution to Teaching – HaSS Faculty category. Basis for this great success was his MBA module on Organisations and People Management.
Benjamin is a Strategic Advisor to and Board Member of the RES Forum, an independent community for international HR & mobility professionals that is now the largest and most active network, specializing in Global Mobility survey data, modelling and analytics. He is also an Advisory Board Member of the Lean Group, Germany. In 2024, he has been appointed to the Supervisory Board of Leada AG, a company developing innovative, tech-based HR solutions. Moreover, Benjamin is a certified LEGO(R) Serious Play facilitator and delivers both offline and online workshops. In order to increase the practical value of his research, he regularly publishes executive summaries and reports targeting practitioners. Moreover, his work has been featured in practitioner outlets, such as People Management, HR Magazine, and the Financial Times as well as having been featured on TV, e.g., on CNN, Reuters, and ARD Tagesschau (Germany's biggest national news program with 10M+ viewers).
My research covers a broad range of topics around managing people and leadership. In particular, while having written my doctoral thesis about expatriation in high risk countries, my focus has extended. I am interested in general topics of (international) leadership and a variety of questions related to organizational behavior. This particularly includes elements of digital leadership and the impact of digitalization on HRM. In my work I have incorporated a broad range of theories, from a variety of fields and mainly apply quantitative methods. Consequently, I work with primary data gathered primarily through questionnaire surveys I was principal investigator on a DFG (German Research Foundation) funded Research Grant from 2013-2016, which examined expatriate management. I am interested in collaborating on research projects with colleagues who share my research interests and are willing to passionately work on these topics.
I am currently involved in teaching Human Resource Management at undergraduate level, am module leader for the GHRM dissertation, and I am module leader of the Organisations and People Management module in the MBA. Currently, I am supervising four doctoral students.
In general, I am interested in supervising prospective PhD students on research projects that involve international human resource management, leadership, and people-related questions of international business - please drop me a line to discuss potential topics and funding opportunities. However, when you do so, make sure to outline how your proposal fits with my interest and area of expertise. If this is not covered in your proposal, I will not be able to get back to you.
