Background

Dr Erwei (David) Xiang is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Accounting and Finance at NUBS.


He has established an extensive research track record through internationally excellent publications in relevant areas. Moreover, his publications have been regarded as top-cited papers and won best-paper awards. He has disseminated research, promoted knowledge exchange, and generated wide impact through media publications or coverage (e.g., BBC Radio, The Guardian, and The Conversation), public comment letter or policy report generation, presentation at national and international conferences and Departmental and University seminars, cross-institution event organisation, and collaboration with local businesses and wider communities. He has led a research cluster, built interdisciplinary and international teams to secure more than a dozen of competitive research grants (over £280K, including a UKRI-NERC grant) as principal investigator or co-investigator, initiated research impact case targeting REF2029, and mentored junior academic colleagues.


He has accumulated substantial teaching experience in Accounting and Finance in the UK, Australia and China and achieved good teaching performance through leading and delivering a breadth of courses at all levels (including undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, and PhD) in various areas of Accounting and Finance for students from diverse backgrounds. He has also successfully attracted and supervised high quality PhD students to completion. More importantly, he has contributed to the curriculum leadership and development, delivered an innovative education, provided high-quality student experience, and developed research-led and employability-embedded teaching. He has also fostered a positive and inclusive learning environment for students to enhance student experience and satisfaction.


He has committed to making a significant contribution to the management and leadership of the school through taking the role of the Ethics Convenor and Co-leader of a research cluster. He has been maintaining good relationships and collaborations with various internal and external stakeholders, local councils, and businesses. He has undertaken external leadership roles through acting as director, council member, or committee member of various associations domestically and internationally. He has been invited to organise international conferences, give seminars, chair conference sessions, discuss papers at renowned conferences, and examine PhD theses. He has acted as an Associate Editor of Business Ethics, the Environment & Responsibility. He has also acted as ad hoc reviewer for high quality journals, such as Journal of Banking & Finance, Journal of Business Ethics, Energy Economics, Abacus, Journal of Accounting Literature, Business Strategy and the Environment, Journal of Economic Behaviour & Organization, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Journal of Environmental Management, Accounting and Finance, Journal of Contemporary Accounting and Economics, and International Review of Economics and Finance.

Research

David’s research interests include capital markets research, sustainability and social responsibility accounting, corporate finance, corporate governance, R&D investment & innovation, and interdisciplinary research.

David has supervised PhD students from enrolment to completion and is happy to supervise PGR students or discuss interests in research degrees.
