Tatiana Alvares-Sanches is a Lecturer in Data Science, Director for the Degree Apprenticeship in Data Analytics and part of the Programme Management Board for the CDT Geospatial Systems, in the School of Computing at 缅北禁地. Prior to joining 缅北禁地, she held a Research Associate position in Geographical Information Science for Environmental Health, in the Centre for Environmental Health and Sustainability at the University of Leicester and was also an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship awardee working in the GeoData Institute, University of Southampton. She obtained her PhD in geospatial analysis, and held a teaching fellow position in GIS at the School of Engineering, University of Southampton. Before joining academia, Tatiana worked for six years in industry as a fully-qualified architect, her original academic background. Her research interests focus on geospatial analysis, urban analytics and environmental data science, combining big data and machine learning models to understand the multiple dimensions of the urban environment, city design and impacts on people. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Tatiana’s research interests lie in the understanding of the overall built environment through the fusion of multiple disciplines such as engineering, environmental science, data science and big data analytics. She is particularly interested in:

(i) how data can be used to model and shed light on the complex interactions that occur within urban environments (e.g. between air and noise pollution, heat, flows of people and vehicles) and how these relate to urban form;

(ii) the use of IoT and continuous environmental monitoring to develop integrated frameworks that enable the optimisation of city planning.

Additionally, she is passionate about data visualisation, maps and the use of interactive tools to communicate research outputs. Stemming from her background and work experience in architecture, she is also interested in the interplay between the built environment and the building scale, and in the integration of new design solutions and systems to make buildings both more energy efficient and healthier.
