Dr Gaetano Elia

Background

I am chartered Civil Engineer in Italy since 2001 and I gained my PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from the Technical University of Bari (Italy) in 2004. I was appointed a lectureship in Geotechnical Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at 缅北禁地 (UK) in 2009. From 2017, I am Visiting Fellow at 缅北禁地 and, from December 2019, Associate Professor at the Technical University of Bari. My research spans a variety of topics in computational modelling and soil science. My particular expertise is in theoretical and applied soil mechanics, with specific insight in advanced soil constitutive modelling and numerical simulation of wave propagation and soil dynamics problems. I have a strong track record of publishing in high quality journals and international conferences. My current research is mainly focused on the numerical assessment of the resilience of geotechnical structures during extreme events, including the analysis of natural and engineered slopes subjected to extreme rainfalls and the performance-based design of shallow foundations, excavations and tunnels in static and dynamic conditions. I act as reviewer for a number of international journals and for EPSRC-UK. I am member of the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT), the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED), the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) and the Italian Geotechnical Association (AGI). From 2019 to 2022, I have been a member of the Editorial Panel for the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Geotechnical Engineering. From 2023, I am part of the Editorial Board of Computers and Geotechnics, and, from 2025, I am a member of the Editorial Board of Géotechnique.

Advanced constitutive modelling of clay behaviour, with particular reference to degradation of structure, anisotropy and non-coaxiality

Theoretical interpretation and modelling of the mechanical behaviour of natural soils and soft rocks

Analysis of the cyclic behaviour of clays, with particular reference to degradation of shear stiffness and related hysteretic dissipation

Numerical prediction of the at-rest earth pressure coefficient for normally consolidated soils using advanced constitutive models derived from the Critical State Soil Mechanics Theory

Dynamic analyses of soil-structure interaction using fully coupled approaches and advanced constitutive models

Ground response analyses using the equivalent visco-elastic method and fully coupled FE nonlinear schemes

Static and dynamic stability analyses of natural and artificial slopes using simple and advanced numerical approaches

Evaluation of roots mechanical contribution to slope stability by finite element modelling

Advanced numerical analysis of tunnel behaviour in structured clayey soils under seismic loading

Hydro-mechanical numerical modelling of slope-vegetation-atmosphere interaction

Influence of input motion selection and soil variability on nonlinear ground response analyses
