Background
I started my career as seagoing Marine Engineer from 1989 and sailed on various merchant vessels for 9 years at different capacities from junior engineering officer to the chief engineering officer. I received my 1st Class Certificate of Competency (STCW 95) in 1997 and then sailed for another 2 years before joining Maritime Institute as lecture to teach seagoing engineer officer.
My longing and desire to learn and progress in academia motivated me to read MSc in Marine Technology in 缅北禁地 in 2000-2001 and achieved a Distinction in Marine Technology. I then continued lecturing at Maritime Institute in Iran as senior lecturer for 6 years. In 2007 I joined 缅北禁地, School of Marine Science and Technology, as Research Assistant to work on EU funded project under FP6 programme, Sustainable Ballast Water Management Plant (BaWaPla). At the same time I read my PhD as part time candidate and research on Inferential measurement and control of ballast water systems using artificial neural network to measure the performance and then control the effectiveness of a combined ballast water treatment system. I was awarded my PhD in 2012.
In 2010 I was appointed as teaching fellow in Marine Engineering and started lecturing number of modules at UG and PG levels including marine engineering practice1 and 2, marine machinery systems, ship performance and ship propulsion.
In 2014 I was appointed as stream leader in marine engineering with the responsibility to lead marine engineering taught programme. I led reviewing and streamlining marine engineering discipline programme as part of a major degree programme review. In 2015 I became lecturer in Marine Technology and continuing to bring knowledge and expertise form both my merchant navy experience as well as my research in marine engineering field.

SCOPUS:
Overview
My seagoing experiences, together with lecturing seagoing engineers for 7 years, added with a subsequent academic education provided me with a wealth of experience and knowledge to develop a broad and internationally recognised research portfolio. I have developed a strong track record since 2011 securing funding from the highest 'gold-standard' sources including EPSRC, Innovate UK and the EU. My principal research is on the theme of 'sustainable shipping' with specific interest in the mathematical modelling of marine engineering systems for online performance monitoring and prediction. Some examples of my specific interest are: Ballast Water Management Systems, Ship performance and emission prediction, Life cycle assessment for marine engineering systems and alternative fuels, including biofuels, propulsion system arrangement including fuel cell. Shipping environmental index and incentive.
Research Projects
Since 2011, my funded research projects include:
Clean North Sea Shipping (CNSS), €4.1Million project funded by the EU, INTERREG IVB programme. This was in collaboration with 19 international collaborators from a wide range of institutions across Europe including NGOs, regulators, industry and research institutions and ultimately made recommendations to the EU on reducing air pollution from regional shipping. The project aim was to reduce air pollution and GHG emissions from regional shipping.
Role: Project manager
Online Monitoring of fuel consumption and emission prediction: Innovate UK funded project under KTP programme (£128K) to collaborate with Royston Ltd. The project was aimed to develop online fuel consumption monitoring product with telemetry capability focusing on offering green benefits to variety of costumers in different marine market sectors.
Role: Principle Investigator
Data mining techniques to extract business intelligence from online operational data: UK funded project under KTP programme (£138K) to collaborate with Royston Ltd. This project will enhance the existing online fuel consumption monitoring capability by adding modules for emissions management, engine performance and condition monitoring; and also to capture data from these activities, the analysis of which could offer value opportunities for the sale of consulting activities.
Role: Principle Investigator
Shipping in Changing Climates (SCC) (~£3.5M) a follow-on project from Low Carbon Shipping (LCS), including and building on the strong university and industry consortium, also funded by the EPSRC. The overall aim was to use holistic systems approach to reduce carbon dioxide from Global shipping.
Role: Co Investigator
Clean North Sea Shipping - Improved Dissemination and Impact. This project was an invited bid on completion of Clean North Sea Shipping on the basis it was ranked as one of top three for quality in its funding stream. We further disseminated the CNSS findings to fully realise their impact.
Role: Co Investigator
Whole Vessel Energy Management (~1.5M). This Innovate UK funded project, working with a local industry partner, Royston, is creating consultancy expertise and monitoring products to reduce the energy consumption in shipping operations through better understanding the complex energy flows throughout ship systems.
Role: Co Investigator
CLean INland SHipping (CLINSH) (~€8M). This project was an invited application from the European Commission's Directorate-General for the Environment, Air & Industrial Emissions Unit who had attended our final CNSS project conference and would like us to extend our research on reduction of air pollution to the inland shipping fleet across Europe. Similar to CNSS, this project comprises collaborators from a wide range of institutions across Europe including, regional policy makers, NGOs, regulators, industry and research institutions to tackle the issue. The consortium kick-off conference was in October 2016.
Role: Co Investigator
Sustainable Tuna Fisheries Through Advanced EOT (SUSTUNTECH) (~€3M)
SUSTUNTECH project used “big data” approaches in daily operations of tuna fishing vessels to generate added value to the environmental data services provided by Copernicus and developed accurate forecast model for fuel consumption for route optimisation. SMARTPPORT will utilise the AI-enabled methodologies developed in SUSTUNTECH for prediction of fuel consumption and emission productions in tuna fisheries operations and extend it to other shipping sectors.
Role: Co Investigator and PI
GATE Rudder System for the Next Generation Propulsion and Steering of Ships (GATERS) (~€5)
GATERS (GATE Rudder System as a Retrofit for the Next Generation Propulsion and Steering of Ships ) is collaborative research project aims to demonstrate the retrofit application of a novel energy saving device, which is called Gate Rudder System, to make a significant impact on the reduction of emissions from waterborne transport. The project is funded by the EC H2020 framework on the topic of “Retrofit Solutions and Next Generation Propulsion for Waterborne Transport”.
