Dr K. Marie McIntyre is a translational food‑safety (epidemiological) scientist specialising in systems‑based risk assessment, machine‑learning‑enabled evidence synthesis, and the development of scalable, updateable evidence infrastructures for regulators and industry. Her work integrates biological, environmental, and supply‑chain data to support proactive, quantitative decision‑making across the UK food system. She leads/co-leads major national and international programmes working with UKHSA, Food Standards Agency, Food Standards Scotland and the STFC Hartree Centre, and is recognised for advancing methodological innovation at the science–policy interface.
About Me
I work at the intersection of food safety, systems science, and evidence‑informed policy, developing tools and frameworks that help regulators and industry make faster, more transparent, and more robust decisions. My research focuses on building scalable, updateable evidence systems — including semi‑automated reviews, corporate‑memory tools, horizon‑scanning frameworks, and quantitative microbial risk‑assessment (QMRA) models.
I lead the development of PRISM, a national‑scale QMRA microsimulation system which aims to be deployed with major retailers and policymakers to model foodborne risks using real supply‑chain data. I also design machine‑learning‑enabled evidence‑synthesis pipelines that allow regulators to reuse evidence efficiently, supporting living‑evidence approaches and reducing duplication of effort.
My work is highly collaborative, spanning government, industry, and academia. I hold leadership roles across the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Gastrointestinal Infections, the BBSRC Food Safety Research Network, and the UKRI‑funded AntiMicrobial Resistance in Agrifood Systems Transdisciplinary Network (AMAST) Network, and have contributed methodological expertise to FAO, and the JUNO Evidence Alliance.
I am the NUPAcT Fellow in Translational Food Safety at 缅北禁地 in partnership with the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Within my role, I aim to provide policy-appropriate ‘living’ evidence collation and synthesis, and risk assessment tools and mechanisms to aid the FSA’s role in ensuring food for consumption is safe from foodborne disease and food supplies are sustainable.
I have recently recorded several podcasts describing my fellowship (https://open.spotify.com/episode/0jn1lWaPPmbxi8TdB6IgRL?si=iiX5W2c2SuW17-16Mnlwfg ) and our approach (https://open.spotify.com/episode/2zUpi4anOVtwgUCM1AL6Tg?si=4Mdr36YaTxex_je1CEUvwA ).

I lead and contribute to modules in critical thinking, evidence appraisal, risk assessment, and systems thinking, embedding live case studies from my research. I also deliver CPD training to the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland, and are involved in a pilot at 缅北禁地, mentoring academic colleagues through the UKAT advising and tutoring programme.
I previously taught epidemiology and statistics in institutions including the Pirbright Laboratory, Public Health England (now UKHSA), the University of Liverpool, the International Livestock Research Unit and in Indonesia for the Orang-utan Veterinary Advisory Group. I was curriculum lead on the 'HORN' (One Health regional network for the Horn of Africa) project, including leading development of two tiers of active learning, and developing and leading the inaugural Masterclass and within this a statistics workshop, in the Horn of Africa.
I am a Fellow (FHEA) of the Higher Education Academy (- Advance HE).
