Comment: Why '7' is the luckiest number Published on: 9 March 2016 Writing for The Conversation, Steve Humble explores the lucky number of so many people. Steve Humble, MBE , Football teams have been wearing numbers since in 1928 (it didn鈥檛 bring them much luck 鈥 they lost 3-2 to Sheffield Wednesday). But it was Manchester United that made the number seven shirt iconic by putting their best players in it 鈥 , who said: It always was an inspiration for me, but it was never my shirt. It was George Best鈥檚, Bryan Robson鈥檚, Eric Cantona鈥檚. The only reason I wanted to wear the No 7 shirt was because of these players. I didn鈥檛 see it as an intimidation, I saw it as a honour 鈥 I always wanted the No 7 shirt, I just never thought I鈥檇 get it. And when the manager decided to give it to me, it was special. Why do we put importance on certain numbers? Could David Beckham鈥檚 words give us an insight into the real reason why people feel number 7 is lucky, or could it be that the history of the number permeates our culture so much that we are immersed in it without really knowing why. Lucky 7 for many, hopefully. Anthony Devlin / PA Archive/Press Association Images
