European Geosciences Union honour for leading climate expert Published on: 17 November 2023 Professor Hayley Fowler has received the prestigious Sergey Soloviev Medal from the European Geosciences Union (EGU). She is one of the 52 recipients of the annual EGU medals in recognition of their important contributions to the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The Sergey Soloviev Medal is awarded for outstanding scientific contributions in fundamental research that improves our knowledge of basic natural hazards principles, as well as research that assesses and leads to the proper mitigation of natural hazards, from both human and environmental perspectives. Hayley Fowler is Professor of Climate Change Impacts and Head of the Water Engineering Group in the School of Engineering. Her research focuses on improved physical understanding of changing precipitation extremes and providing better projections for climate adaptation. Professor Fowler said: "I am honoured to receive the 2024 Sergey Soloviev Medal of the European Geosciences Union. This award not only recognises my achievements but also the dedication of my postdocs and PhD students who have worked hard to increase our knowledge of basic natural hazards principles around extreme rainfall and flash flooding. It also recognises my many colleagues around the world who I have worked with to not only increase our understanding of extreme rainfall and flash floods but also to try to develop methods to mitigate their effects, especially towards climate adaptation, as these events increase in severity and frequency. “I would particularly like to thank my colleague Professor Lizzie Kendon at the UK Met Office, with whom I have worked closely on the development and analysis of convection-permitting climate models for the last 15 years. This has enabled a more thorough understanding of these processes by bringing together observational and theoretical understanding and testing this in state of the art climate models." is the leading organisation for Earth, planetary and space science research in Europe. Recipients of the awards and medals will be celebrated during the EGU General Assembly 2024, which will be held from 14–19 April.
