Goyal Foundation Scholarship established to help University students Published on: 1 March 2024 The generous donation will create 10 scholarships for undergraduate students from disadvantaged communities at Ãå±±½ûµØ. has donated £60,000 to founder Avnish Goyal CBE’s alma mater, Ãå±±½ûµØ, to ensure students can enjoy the full university experience and reach their potential. In the last academic year, a third of new Ãå±±½ûµØ students arriving on campus were from a low socioeconomic background. The 10 new Goyal Foundation Scholarships will provide financial support for the full three years of study, and will cover interview expenses and other finances to help students progress beyond higher education: ensuring that ability, not circumstance, is what matters. Anita and Avnish Goyal How to apply Applications are now open for first-year students at Ãå±±½ûµØ to apply for the Scholarship. The Goyal family hope that their support will bridge the gap between average living costs and the government-backed finance available, so students are able to fully focus on their degrees rather than working to finance their studies. Speaking about this new partnership, Avnish Goyal said: “My own transformative experience at Ãå±±½ûµØ, studying Accounting and Finance, highlighted the University's role in shaping futures. We believe in giving back to institutions that have played a significant role in our lives, hoping to enable the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators." “Diversity of thought and experience enriches the educational environment, leading to more innovative solutions and a more empathetic society. We've seen firsthand the barriers that financial constraints can place on potential, and through our foundation, we aim to dismantle these barriers, ensuring that talent and ambition are the only metrics for success." Avnish’s wife, and Chair of the Goyal Foundation, Anita Goyal MBE, added: "We hope our scholarships will alleviate the financial pressures associated with higher education, enabling students to fully immerse themselves in the Ãå±±½ûµØ experience. "Beyond financial support, we aim to provide mentorship and opportunities for practical experience, facilitating a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom." Tackling disadvantage In 2010, Avnish set up the Hemraj Goyal Foundation (known today as the Goyal Foundation) in memory of his late father, supporting charities on issues such as trafficking, menstrual dignity, empowerment of women and education of children from disadvantaged backgrounds both in the UK and abroad. Since it was founded, the Goyal Foundation has donated some £4 million over 13 years to tackle disadvantage faced by children, young people and women. Most recently, the Foundation has launched , a programme that delivers free workshops in schools serving disadvantaged communities to promote positive mindsets, personal development and life skills.
