Dr Dan Martin

Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology

Background

Dan joined the School of Psychology as a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology in June 2023, bringing experience from previous roles at Durham University and the University of Winchester.

An HCPC-registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist, Dan provides psychology support to Goalball UK’s High-Performance Pathway programme and consults with a variety of clients across the North East. He is also a Trustee for Brave Mind, a mental health charity dedicated to supporting the rugby community.

Research

Dan’s research explores multiple areas within Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology, with a primary focus on high-performance environments and systems in elite sport organizations. His work examines how these settings shape individuals' professional experiences, with particular interest in self-care, professional quality of life, professional identity, mental well-being, and organizational support.

Dan is also interested in the application of Family Systems Theory within applied sport psychology practice and has a keen interest in qualitative methodologies to explore complex dynamics within sport and performance settings.



Teaching

Dan teaches primarily on the MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology programme, specifically on Applied Sport and Performance Psychology (PSY8076), and Professional Development for Sport and Exercise Psychologists - (PSY8073). He also provides taught content for Undergraduate programmes within the School.
