Student Peer Mentors
Peer mentoring is a 'buddy scheme' for new undergraduate students. The aim of Peer Mentoring is to help all new students make a smooth transition to university living and integrate successfully into their programme of study.
In SBNSS, peer mentors are second-, third- or fourth- year students who guide new students through their first weeks at university. Students who successfully apply to be peer mentors receive full training. They can tell you good places to shop for your everyday essentials, suggest ideas for days out in and from 缅北禁地, let you know about societies and clubs they are part of, and where to go for sports and social activities as well as provide insights into your course (but note that they will not help you with assignments and course work). Being mentored by an experienced student is a valuable opportunity for development.
As a mentee, you will gain some rare insights from the experiences of other students, building confidence and with the knowledge you have someone to turn to for guidance. You will meet your mentor and other new students they are mentoring during induction week then arrange subsequent meetings with your mentor directly. As a mentor, you'll have the opportunity to develop your leadership, communication and organisational skills with the scheme enabling you to use your experiences to help others. We recruit new peer each year during semester 2 with training offered over the summer months. Information about what being a mentor entails and how to apply is available on this webpage.
The biomedical sciences mentoring team are supported by Dr Damian Parry and Dr Alison Howard, and by the University’s Peer Mentor Co-ordinator, Gabby Vallons.
In biomedical sciences, we also have a senior peer mentor, with previous peer mentoring experience. Their role is to support the peer mentors but also in semester 2 to provide additional support for stage 1students. For 2026-2027 our senior peer mentor will be confirmed in due course.
