Online tests

You'll receive an email when the tests are available, and you'll then have seven days to complete them.

The assessments are untimed, so you can work through them at your own pace. Results are usually released in December

All candidates receive feedback, providing insights into their strengths and areas for development. Successful applicants will then be invited to progress to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Find out more about the tests on the and below.

Test 1: Work Place Scenarios

This assessment measures your judgement and interpersonal skills in workplace situations. You will watch 12 short video scenarios. You'll then assess how effective different responses would be.

For each scenario, you will rate a number of possible actions as:

  • Counterproductive – likely to make the situation worse.
  • Ineffective – unlikely to help resolve the issue.
  • Partially effective – would help to some extent, but is not the best response.
  • Effective – an appropriate response that would help resolve the situation.

You can view an on the Civil Service website to see the format of the assessment.

Test 2: Case Study Assessment

What to expect

You'll review 7 pieces of background information before completing 24 scenario-based questions.

Some questions ask you to identify the most and least effective responses.

Others ask you to rate possible actions as:

  • Counterproductive - would make the situation worse
  • Ineffective - unlikely to help
  • Partially effective - would help to some extent
  • Effective - a strong response that would help resolve the situation.

  • Oral Briefing Exercise – you'll review information and present your recommendations.
  • Personal Development Conversation – you'll discuss your experiences, strengths, and development.

Each exercise is assessed independently by different assessors.

You'll complete the assessment remotely using a virtual assessment platform on your laptop.

Before attending, you'll need to provide proof of identity, usually a passport or other valid photo ID.

For guidance, examples and preparation materials, see the

Assessments vary by scheme.

If you're invited to an FSB, you'll receive a guide explaining what to expect and how to prepare. Be sure to read this carefully before attending.
