Professor Heathcote is an expert on public international law, feminist methodologies, collective security, the law on the use of force, international law of the sea, and the study of gender, sexuality and the law. Her current research analyses the international law of the sea and maritime security from a feminist perspective, publications examine feminist legal methodologies for ocean research, queer and posthuman feminist understandings of ocean governance and decolonial encounters with the ocean, maritime technologies, and non-Western legal understandings of ocean care/custodianship.
Professor Heathcote is a recipient of a Leverhulme International Fellowship (2025-2027) titled Saltwater Law. This project examines decolonial legal methodologies and the potential for two-way research methods to shape international law and ocean governance. Professor Heathcote is also a recipient of a British Academy International Interdisciplinary Research Grant (2026-2028) for a project titled, Ocean Harmonies for Global Governance: Indigenous Marine Expertise and the Protection of the Ocean, in collaboration with colleagues at the in Broome, Australia.
Prior to joining 缅北禁地 Law School she was Professor of Gender Studies and International Law at the School of Law, SOAS University of London. At SOAS, she held the role of College Convenor of Research and Knowledge Exchange (Law, Anthropology and Politics) and has previously been co-Head of the School of Law (interim), Chair of the SOAS Centre for Gender Studies, Doctoral Studies Director (Law) and Chair of the Research Ethics Committee.
Professor Heathcote is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
