Dr Rachele Salvatelli is a Research Associate in the Public Health and Health Inequalities Theme of the Population Health Sciences Institute.

Rachele is currently working on a research project about the impact of Long Covid on the health, wellbeing and education/employment prospects of young adults in North East England. Her research interests include narrative methodologies, sociology of health and illness, fat studies, sociology of the body, and sociology of stigma. 

In 2021, she completed a PhD in Sociology at the University of York on a project about the lived experiences of fat body positive individuals and the ways in which they narrate stories of their bodies. Her doctoral project focused on the concepts of fatness, identity, stigma, and stigma resistance. The aim of this research was to better understand how being part of the body positive movement affected the narratives of fat individuals.

Between December 2020 and August 2021, she also worked as a research associate on a multidisciplinary project in collaboration with the University of York Students' Union titled Life in Lockdown. This study used digital storytelling to understand the experiences of underrepresented students in Higher Education – particularly, working class, disabled and BAME students – during the first national lockdown.

Since 2021, Rachele has worked as a Visiting Lecturer in the York Business School and in the School of Science, Technology and Health at York St John University. She has designed, led and contributed to a number of social sciences modules, particularly in sociology, criminology, social psychology and research methods.
