Bits & Bobs: the anatomy of sex

We need you!

We're looking for enthusiastic staff to support with a public engagement event at the Great North Museum: Hancock, on the evening of Thursday 15th October (6-9pm approx.)

Bits & Bobs: The anatomy of sex is organised by the anatomy team at the medical school, this adult-only event aims to de-mystify pelvic and genitourinary anatomy, educating the public and providing a safe, light-hearted and informative environment to ask those ‘awkward’ questions!

It ran successfully in 2022, and this year we would love to expand the event to include stations on anything within the ‘anatomy of sex’ theme. This could be around:

  • sex
  • body image
  • gender
  • attraction
  • relationships
  • anything else relevant

We welcome those with expertise in any topic area, includingscience, history, psychology, art and theatre.

We’re particularly keen to expand the inclusivity of the event, and would love LGBTQ+ representation and discussion.

How does it work?

The event involves several stations of activities (games, quizzes, crafts, etc), that are scattered across the museum. It is adults-only*, taking place out-of-hours (with a bar!).

We are also open to more formal sessions. We can arrange for a ‘lecture-style’ room if you have a short talk or presentation you think would be suitable.

*Not strictly enforced, and not because of the subject matter, but because the activities are targeted at adults rather than children

What would I need to do?

You would need to plan and deliver an interactive activity aimed at the general public.

We can provide a space, and basic equipment such as tables and chairs, poster boards, power supply etc. You would need to bring anything you need for your activities.

We do not currently have funding, but are looking into this, and the museum may be able to support with provision of some materials.

I’m interested/think I might have an idea!

Please email emily.green@newcastle.ac.uk or bas.olthof@newcastle.ac.uk to discuss further. Any/all ideas are welcome and there is no commitment at this stage!

Cell Detectives

began in 2018 with a vision to share their passion for science, technology and experimentation with the public.

Through a combination of fun activities, workshops and games, they give the public a chance to use cutting-edge scientific equipment. This allows people to better understand the microscopic world, exploring everyday objects from a whole new perspective.

Their team of scientists engage the public with their research through examining cells and tissues.

The Cell Detectives are open to staff and postgraduate students. If you would like to get involved, or you would like them to visit your school, club, organisation or museum, contact the team at bioimaging@ncl.ac.uk.

First Responders

缅北禁地 First Responders (NUFR) is a student-led volunteer organisation. They help provide emergency medical assistance within the local community.

NUFR are trained in first aid and pre-hospital care. They work in collaboration with the North East Ambulance Service, offering rapid response to medical emergencies.

Their aim is to arrive prior to the ambulance crew so that they can help stabilise patients and carry out initial assessments.

They not only provide advice using medical knowledge, but also to help triage patients by priority of needs.

They're mainly involved with Category 1 and Category 2 emergency calls. These may involve handling falls patients, seizures, chest pains, breathing difficulties or cardiac arrests.

To find out more, visit NUFR on Instagram (), X () or Facebook ().

Science Adventures

Science Adventures are our exciting free science events for primary school children in the school holidays.

Run by students and staff from the School of Psychology, each event allows children and their families to take part in a variety of interactive activities.

Previous Science Adventures events have included:

  • making brain hats to learn how the brain works
  • completing challenges to understand how animals feel about the world
  • using virtual reality to learn about how we see

Families also have the opportunity to experience science first hand by participating in psychology studies. These short, fun studies give families an understanding of research and its role in everyday life.

Currently, researchers at Science Adventures are conducting studies into:

  • learning and memory
  • creativity
  • empathy
  • social learning
  • moral decision making
  • language acquisition
  • vision
