Ahmad's research mainly involves investigating the molecular and pathological mechanisms behind depression, as well as neurodegerative illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, using post-mortem brain tissue.
Ahmad previously supervised a National Institute for Health Research-funded laboratory-based PhD project examining the role of the thalamus in visual hallucinations in dementia with Lewy bodies and is currently co-supervisor of a laboratory-based Alzheimer's Society-funded Doctoral Training Centre PhD project (PIs, Thomas, Morris), examining the role of the anterior cingulate cortex in depression in dementia with Lewy bodies. He is part of the Neurodegenerative Pathology Research Group, led by Professor Johannes Attems.
Ahmad also has expertise in neuropharmacology, with his PhD focusing on the mechanisms of action of antidepressant drugs in the hippocampus.
Ahmad is also a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science at Teesside University.
