Dr Anna Mayhew

Associate Clinical Researcher

Background
Anna is a Consultant Research Physiotherapist, who leads on the research at John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre based at the Centre for Life. She also works clinically on physiotherapy assessment and management for outpatient multidisciplinary neuromuscular clinics across the North East and Cumbria for adult and paediatric patients.
Research

Since March 2018, is acting Principal Investigator SMAREACH and as Co-Investigator in Clinical Outcome Study in Dysferlinopathy

Research Physiotherapy Lead working with JWMDRC Team to advise on Physiotherapy within Trials

Performs clinical endpoints for many trials in DMD, SMA, Pompe and LGMD

AGM conducts peer reviewed submissions to the journal “Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology” and “Pediatric Physiotherapy” and Neuromuscular Disorders.

AGM is a Core member of an expert group, TREAT-NMD Advisory Committee for Therapeutics (TACT) which is a unique multi-disciplinary international group of well recognized academic and industry drug development experts, who meet twice a year to review and provide guidance on the translation and development path of therapeutics programs in rare neuromuscular diseases.

AGM has had significant involvement in the development and evaluation of key clinical endpoints in NMD including the North Star Ambulatory Assessment for DMD, Performance of Upper Limb Module for DMD, Revised Upper Limb Module for SMA, Revised Hammersmith Scale for SMA, North Star Assessment for Limb Girdle Type Muscular Dystrophies

Teaching

Anna is involved in training on Outcome measure in DMD, SMA and LGMD

She is a teacher on RCPCH - Early Recognition of Neuromuscular Disorders 


She trains on evaluation of clinical endpoints on the TreatNMD Summer School  and on the MSc Module 

She supervisors two PhD students. One at 缅北禁地, one from Barcelona and  one Masters Student

She has developed of ONLINE Resources for Physiotherapists –

 to upskill physiotherapists nationally in the community and in tertiary centre of the assessment and management of NMD
