Background

Dr Iain McKinnon is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Psychiatry and a Consultant Psychiatrist in Cumbria Northumberland Tyne and Wear (CNTW) NHS Foundation Trust.

Research

He has research interests at the interface between forensic mental health services, and the criminal justice system, vulnerable populations and an interest in multimorbidity. He has developed and overseen the implementation of new screening procedures in police custody in the UK, as well as other innovative interventions for offenders with diverse health conditions. He has held a NIHR Doctoral Training Fellowship, and ESRC funding to investigate police healthcare systems, as well as NIHR funding to investigate housing stability for people with intellectual disability in the community, and trauma among neurodiverse populations.

Dr McKinnon currently holds a NIHR Senior Clinical Practitioner Researcher Award (SCPRA) and leads the NIHR HS&DR multisite study “Police involvement in interagency crisis mental health first response pathways in England: A realist and cost consequence analysis” (PIONEER-MH). He has won over £3m in grants over the last 10 years.

He currently co-leads the Mental Health, Dementia and Neurodegeneration Theme in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, which is closely aligned to the NIHR BRC Dementia, Mental Health and Neurodegeneration Theme.

Dr McKinnon mentors clinicians to develop their research skills, sits on the Northern Deanery School of Psychiatry, as well has representing CNTW in the Research Delivery Network.

Clinical

Dr McKinnon is a Consultant Psychiatrist within CNTW secure services and treats offenders with a range of mental disorders and developmental conditions. He has been central to the redevelopment of secure services within the CNTW, and has led numerous quality improvement projects. He has been involved in organising the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Forensic Faculty Annual Conference, and is leading research and quality improvement activities within the RCPsych and the European Association of Mental Health and Intellectual Disability.
