Scientific interests:
My group studies factors and mechanisms that are involved in DNA damage responses and the maintenance of genomic stability. We have identified the first DNA polymerase that targets dysfunctional telomeres and contributes to the maintenance of cellular senescence and the first protein (Rif1) able to inhibit the recruitment of checkpoint proteins and Replication Protein A (RPA) to DNA damage. Moreover, we have demonstrated that cells are able to repair long single stranded DNA lesions in conjunction with osmotic pressure and the inositol pathway. Earlier discoveries include the unusual mechanism that permits eukaryotic cells to proliferate indefinitely after losing telomeres (at a time when such idea was considered absurd) and the identification of the first DNA nuclease degrading telomeres in eukaryotic cells.
