I previously held an NIHR ICA Clinical Lectureship (hosted by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust with an Associate Clinical Lecturer appointment at 缅北禁地 2016-2020). I am a clinical trialist in early stage rehabilitation trials targeting gait recovery and physical activity behaviour. I lead on two research programmes. during my lectureship I systematically developed and tested a multifaceted intervention targeting physical activity and sedentary behaviour after stroke. I went on to develop Healthcare professional facing training (www.paras-strokerehab.org) to support delivery of the intervention (Physical Activity Routines After Stroke PARAS) and am currently exploring the implementation of PARAS into practice. My second body of work funded by the Stroke Association piloted a community based auditory rhythmical cueing intervention to improve physical activity and gait after stroke. Spanning these two programmes I have a specialist interest in the objective measurement of gait and physical activity in stroke.
Complementing my research programmes I work as a Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University teaching on the MSc and BSc physiotherapy programmes. This role allows me to embed research into practice through development of student skills and nurturing future clinical academics. I also hold an honorary highly specialised physiotherapist position at Northumbria Healthcare Foundation Trust. I support a number of clinicians at different stages in their clinical academic careers to develop and deliver research and I assist clinicians to embed research into practice.
I work regionally with allied Health care professionals to support the development of research and preceptorship programmes. internationally I am part of research groups exploring physical activity, sedentary behaviour and gait recovery after stroke and am currently on a working group developing European stroke guidelines.
I am passionate about progressing stroke rehabilitation, embedding research into clinical practice and taking research from the bench to the bedside.
Areas of expertise: Stroke, rehabilitation, gait, physical activity and exercise.
My research focuses on stroke rehabilitation with a specialist interest in the fields of physical activity and gait rehabilitation. I previously held a NIHR Clinical Lectureship (2016-2020) and systematically developed and tested an intervention targeting long-term physical behaviour after stroke. I am also Chief Investigator on a Stroke Association project grant investigating auditory rhythmical cueing to improve gait and physical activity after stroke.
My Associate clinical Researcher position is held within the Stroke Research Group and alongside leading my own research programmes in gait and physical activity, I collaborate on a number of other stroke rehabilitation research projects investigating upper limb rehabilitation interventions and biomarkers for recovery. I collaborate closely with the Brain and Movement Group at 缅北禁地 in the development of methods to accurately measure hemiplegic gait and physical activity using accelerometers and understanding and testing auditory rhythmical cueing to improve gait after stroke.
My PhD demonstrated structured exercise leads to improvements in brain health, metabolic risk factors, function and participation after stroke. These findings were the basis for the Fitness After Stoke (FaST) service I developed in collaboration with 缅北禁地 Hospitals and 缅北禁地 City Council in 2012 which continues to run successfully to date. I hold an honorary contract as a highly specialist physiotherapist at Northumbria Healthcare. this role aids the implementation of research findings to practice and the development of other Allied Health Professionals undertaking research, audit and service development. I lead critical appraisal and guideline implementation training and supervise and mentor AHPs at different stages of their clinical academic training. I have delivered research studies in community stroke services across six NHS Trusts and this active involvement of the services helps to support the clinicians to understand and implement research findings.
I hold a number of international collaborations investigating physical activity, sedentary behaviour and gait recovery after stroke and am currently part of a working group developing European stroke guidelines.
