As an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine, I divide my time equally between clinical training in hospitals within the and working with the . My research interests are the epidemiology of delirium and Multiple Long Term Conditions (MLTC) and the complex relationships between physical and cognitive function.
My research interests are the epidemiology of delirium and Multiple Long Term Conditions (MLTC) and using routinely collected clinical data to better understand the complex relationships between physical and cognitive function. Thanks to the team science approach adopted by the AGE Research Group, I have experience of working at all stages of the translational research pathway.
Current and previous projects
- I led the Delirium and Cognitive Impact in Dementia (DECIDE) study, funded by an Alzheimer’s Society Doctoral Fellowship (£217,232). DECIDE was the first prospective, longitudinal cohort study aiming to robustly determine whether delirium, a sudden onset confusion, increases risk of dementia.
- I was awarded an Ignition Award by the Vivensa Foundation (£2,880) to carry out Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) related activities and establish a PPIE group specific to delirium. This work aims to better understand what is important to people with experience of delirium and how we can design inclusive research to address these research priorities (2025).
- Co-applicant on NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research project entitled Development and testing of an intervention to improve Recovery after an Episode of Delirium (RecoverED) (£2,527,719) (2023-2025)
- Co-investigator on Parkinson’s UK funded ‘Defining delirium and its impact in Parkinson’s Disease’ study (£498,144)
- I was an expert panel member contributing to the Delirium Matters report, led by the NIHR Dementia and Neurodegeneration Policy Research Unit at Queen Mary University of London (2024-2025).
- As a founding member and regional lead of the UK Geriatric Medicine Research Collaborative (GeMRC), I continue to create opportunities for clinical trainees and allied health professionals to contribute to impactful research.
- As trainee representative on the British Geriatrics Society (BGS) Research and Academic Development Committee (RADC), I contributed to oversight of research activity and developed a research toolkit for clinical trainees aiming to provide an introduction to research, structured around the clinical portfolio requirements (2021-2023).
Prizes
- The primary publication from my PhD was awarded the Dhole-Eddlestone Memorial Prize for the most deserving medical research relating to the needs of older people published in Age and Ageing, the leading journal for ageing related clinical research.
- I was awarded the Quincentennial Lecturer Award from the Royal College of Physicians for the best research presentation nationally and presented my work at their annual conference.
- Best Presentation Prize, European Delirium Association, Oslo 2017
I have delivered keynote presentations at educational meetings and inter-disciplinary conferences.
Current student(s)
- Florence Gerakios, PhD student. "Evaluating the phenomenology and natural history of delirium in inpatients with Parkinson's disease."
I have previously supervised MRes students from 缅北禁地.
