Staff Profile
Dr Stuart Maitland
NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Neurophysiology
- Personal Website:
My academic background is in neurophysiology and computational neuroscience, with a PhD focusing on digital signal processing and neural mechanisms. I also hold an MSc with Distinction in Neuroinformatics, where I specialized in modeling neurological systems and neural networks.
My expertise involves translating this knowledge into medical applications, such as developing signal processing for a novel MicroEMG device. I am proficient in data science and machine learning, using NumPy, Pandas, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn for analysis and model development. My technical skills also extend to web development with JavaScript and Django.
My work has been recognized with awards including the ECCN Visiting Scholar award, an NIHR BRC Fellowship, and the Adrian Prize for Clinical Neurophysiology. I was also honored to be selected as the Turner Warwick Lecturer for the Royal College of Physicians in London.
I am seeking to apply my skills to new challenges in medical research and patient care and am open to collaborations that advance healthcare through technology.
I'm a clinical researcher in Computational Neurophysiology, looking at new ways of measuring the health of the motor units which control our muscles. I also look at the implementation and challenges of AI in healthcare.
My research has developed new methods of measuring the structure and function of motor units, including ultrasound, multi-electrode EMG, and new forms of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
I teach Neurophysiology on the 缅北禁地 MB BS curriculum, and a short introduction to Neurology for the dentistry course. I have delivered teaching on EEG and NCS/EMG to postgraduate doctors locally.
I supervise medical students performing short research placements, SSCs, and SFP doctors completing longer projects in human motor neuroscience.
