NCMD Research Seminar Series 16th October 2026
Presented by Professor Cynthia Fu, Professor of Affective Neuroscience & Psychotherapy, Centre for Affective Disorders, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London and at the University of East London, and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist.
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a potential first line treatment for depression. The initial pilot studies through to randomised controlled trials and current NIHR-funded studies of home-based tDCS will be reviews: a multicentre randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of course of home-based tDCS in major depressive disorder (HOME)(www.myhometrial.co.uk); multicentre RCT of the efficacy of home-based tDCS for bipolar depression (BDEP) (www.bdeptrial.co.uk); and ADEP, which is examining the feasibility in adolescent depression. Clinical findings, providing treatment at home, safety and adherence, and the potential role of home-based tDCS in the treatment of depressive disorders will be discussed.
Professor Cynthia Fu is Professor of Affective Neuroscience and Psychotherapy at the Centre for Affective Disorders, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London and at the University of East London, and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist. Her research focuses on depression, its neural mechanisms and the development of new treatments. She is Chief Investigator of NIHR-funded studies investigating home-based transcranial direct current stimulation for mood disorders, including the HOME trial in major depressive disorder and the BDEP study in bipolar depression.
