Cartographic Observation
Using mapping to analyse the impact of learning spaces
What is cartographic observation?
This tool involves using a classroom floor plan to map how the space is used by the teachers and pupils. The movements are drawn in and notes of the action/interaction at the different positions are added.
Through combining the mapping with the descriptions it is possible to analyse the impact of the existing learning space on the practices and activities of the teachers and students. This in turn can facilitate ideas for optimal interior design and improved use of rooms for teaching and learning.
