My research uses the arts and heritage to provide new perspectives on critical themes within cultural gerontology such as:

• resilience
• connectivity and community participation
• ageing well at home and in community environments
• inclusion and participation in the community
• healthy ageing and living better for longer
• emotional regulation in older people

I am working on a project on the relationship between co-creative art and relational caring and a second that involves participatory film making in care homes as a response to the pandemic.

I have been involved in research projects funded by AHRC, ESRC, and MRC to the value of £3.7M.

I am actively seeking PhD students in these areas.

The timeliness and importance of this work is illustrated by the increasing numbers of older people. Worldwide numbers those over 65 are projected to increase from 390 million now to 800 million by 2025 and in the UK to have doubled to around 19 million by 2050.

Recent Projects

Co-creative arts and relational care for people living in care homes – developing and strengthening strategic partnerships for impact

Principal investigator – this project looks at the relationship between co-creative arts and relational care and has been funded by the ESRC Impact Acceleration Account - 2024.

My Corona Winter

Co-investigator - this project worked with a local care home to produce a film of their experiences of lockdown and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-21), extra funding has been received for editing the final film.

Mapping Contemporary Art in the Heritage Experience: Creation, Consumption and Exchange

Co-investigator – AHRC, an interdisciplinary research project that will critically examine the role and practice of temporary visual art commissioning within heritage properties in Britain, £775,000, 2016-19.

The role of creative interventions in fostering connectivity and resilience in older people

Co-investigator – AHRC Connected Communities Summit 2013 follow-up fund, Exploring how creative interventions can help develop connectivity and resilience for older people. £40,000, 2014

Dementia and Imagination
