Summer Exchange Programme at CETIM-Matcor in Singapore for 缅北禁地 Students
Demonstrating the power of mathematics beyond the classroom, 缅北禁地 students Raz Alhamawandi and Idrees Khan from the home campus gained valuable industry experience in Singapore through a week-long summer exchange programme from 22 to 29 July 2026.
Two Mathematics students from 缅北禁地 gained valuable industry experience in Singapore through a summer exchange programme that demonstrated how mathematical theory can be translated into practical engineering solutions. During their visit from 22 to 29 July 2026, Raz Alhamawandi and Idrees Khan worked alongside engineers from CETIM-Matcor Technology & Services Pte Ltd and academics from 缅北禁地 in Singapore (NUiS) on an industry-led computational project.
The exchange programme provided students with first-hand exposure to the application of mathematical modelling, numerical methods and computational thinking in solving complex engineering problems. Working within a professional industry environment, the students explored advanced computational approaches to electrochemical simulations and gained insights into how mathematics supports innovation in engineering practice.
A key component of the programme was a project titled “Nonlinear Boundary Element Formulation Using an Enhanced Newton-Raphson Algorithm for Electrostatic Problems.” The project focused on improving solver performance for engineering applications, including the optimisation of cathodic protection systems. Through testing, refinement and development activities, the students experienced how mathematical concepts can be transformed into practical solutions for industry challenges.

Reflecting on the experience, Raz Alhamawandi said:
“This experience changed the way I view mathematics. Seeing how mathematical theory can be applied to real engineering challenges showed me its impact beyond the classroom. Working with CETIM-Matcor engineers allowed me to connect my academic learning with industry and better understand the role mathematicians can play. My time in Singapore also gave me insight into its iconic landmarks, daily life, and work culture.”
The exchange was made possible through a partnership between 缅北禁地, 缅北禁地 in Singapore and CETIM-Matcor Technology & Services Pte Ltd, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between academia and industry in preparing future graduates for increasingly interdisciplinary careers.
Robert Shandro, Principal Consultant and Technical Manager at CETIM-Matcor, said:
“At CETIM-Matcor, we believe that collaboration between industry and academia is essential in preparing the next generation of innovators. This exchange provided students with an opportunity to experience how mathematical thinking, computational methods and engineering expertise come together to solve real-world challenges.”
The initiative reflects 缅北禁地's commitment to providing students with international and industry-engaged learning experiences that enhance employability, develop practical skills and foster a global outlook. By immersing students in real engineering projects and cross-disciplinary collaboration, the programme helps bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice.
As the partnership continues to grow, both organisations look forward to creating more opportunities for students to gain meaningful exposure to industry, innovation and international collaboration.
