Accepting a job role

If you have been assigned a role, you will receive an email titled ‘Unitemps Job Advert Link – Your Role Title'. This email will contain a job-specific link that you must follow and complete to formally accept the role.

Creating your Unitemps account in advance using the steps above will make this process quicker.

To accept a role, you will need to:

  • click the job-specific link in the email and log in to your Unitemps account
    • if you have not yet created a Unitemps account, follow the instructions above.
  • upload a CV (see FAQs below)
  • add at least two references to your account (see FAQs below)
  • declare if you have any unspent conditional cautions or convictions, where applicable
  • agree with the Unitemps Terms and Conditions
  • confirm acceptance of the role

You will need to repeat this process for each role you accept.

Eligibility to Work Check

What is an Eligibility to Work Check?

Before we can place you in your role, we have a legal obligation to check that you are allowed to work in the UK. This process is called an Eligibility to Work Check (also known as a Right to Work Check).

The Unitemps team will contact you directly with instructions. You will be asked to provide documents to demonstrate your right to work in the UK.

All student workers are required to complete an Eligibility to Work Check as part of the Unitemps onboarding process.

In most cases, you will only need to complete this check once. You will be invited to do so as part of the onboarding process for your first role. If you hold a visa, you may need to complete the check more than once, for example if your visa is renewed.

A list of acceptable documents can be found on the . We recommend ensuring you have the appropriate documentation ready in advance.

Please note: Eligibility to Work Checks are initiated by the Unitemps team. Students cannot arrange a check before they have been formally offered a role through Unitemps.

Before you start work

Assignment Statement

Once you have completed all required onboarding steps, including your Eligibility to Work Check, and the Unitemps team has finalised the details, you will receive an email titled 'Assignment Statement', otherwise known as your role confirmation.

This email will confirm that you can start work and will include important information about your role, so make sure to read through it carefully.

After you receive your Assignment Statement, please contact your manager to make sure you know how, when and where to report for work. If you have any questions about your role, please reach out to your manager.

You must not start work until you have received your Assignment Statement.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need to upload a CV and two references as part of the onboarding process?

This is a standard requirement for all Unitemps roles. You will not be able to proceed with the onboarding process unless you upload a CV and enter details of two references.

To avoid delays, we recommend uploading a basic CV and entering reference details for now. You can update these later, and they will not affect your current role.

Who can I list as a reference?

You can list a range of people as references, such as:

  • Your manager
  • A previous employer
  • An academic staff member

If needed, you can enter details like a friend or family member to complete the process - this will not affect your current role.

Will Unitemps contact my referees?

No. References are not routinely requested or checked. Referees will only be contacted if this is specifically required for a role you apply for in the future (for example, if stated in a job advert).

I worked as a student worker before Unitemps. Do I still need a new Eligibility to Work check with the Unitemps team?

Yes. You will still need to complete a new Eligibility to Work check as part of the Unitemps onboarding process.

Although you remain employed by the University, you will be working under Unitemps employment conditions and will have a new employee record on the Unitemps system. This is required to meet regulations.

If you have not been invited to register with Unitemps, please do not arrange an Eligibility to Work check. Eligibility to Work checks are only required for students who have been offered a role and are being onboarded by Unitemps. If you do not currently have a role arranged through Unitemps, no action is required at this stage.

What documents do I need to complete an Eligibility to Work check with the Unitemps team?

You will be asked to provide documents as part of the Eligibility to Work check with Unitemps. Further instructions will be provided by email.

A list of acceptable documents to demonstrate your right to work in the UK can be found on the .

Why does my Unitemps pay rate look lower than before?

Unitemps displays your hourly pay rate separately from your holiday pay, whereas roles previously through the Student Employment on Campus system were advertised with holiday pay included in the total hourly rate.

Although you remain employed by the University, you will be working under Unitemps employment conditions and will have a new employee record on the Unitemps system. This means your pay has not decreased - it is simply shown differently. Your overall pay, including holiday pay, remains the same.

What happens if I don't complete my Unitemps registration and onboarding before my role is due to start?

You must complete your full Unitemps registration and onboarding, including your Eligibility to Work check, before you can start your role; otherwise, this may cause delays and you will be unable to work until it is complete.

You will receive confirmation from Unitemps once your registration and onboarding process is complete in an email titled 'Assignment Statement' and you can then start working.

I don't have a role planned - can I still register with Unitemps?

If you wish to create a Unitemps account, please follow the steps above.

As the Unitemps system is new to the University, we are currently prioritising the setup of existing roles and assignments. As a result, new vacancies are not yet being advertised through the platform. Opportunities will begin to be advertised later this year.

If you do not currently have a role arranged through Unitemps, no further action is required after creating your account.

Please do not arrange an Eligibility to Work check unless you have been instructed to do so by the Unitemps team.

I am registering for Unitemps. Can I do a prospective Eligibility to Work check?

No. Eligibility to Work checks are only required for students who have been offered a role and are completing the onboarding process with Unitemps.

The Unitemps team will contact you directly with instructions if an Eligibility to Work check is required as part of your onboarding.

If you do not currently have a role arranged through Unitemps, no action is required at this stage.

Please do not arrange an Eligibility to Work check unless you have been instructed to do so by the Unitemps team.
