Update on Faith Space Arrangements

Following recent safety and security concerns, we are taking the opportunity to consider and discuss our arrangements for Faith Spaces to ensure we continue to support the needs of our community while providing a safe and welcoming environment for students and colleagues.

8 October 2026

As an interim measure, and with effect from Friday 9 October, a number of changes will be introduced within our Faith Spaces, including:

  • access to all Faith Spaces will be restricted to our students, colleagues and Alumni with smartcard access
  • students and colleagues should be prepared to present their Smartcard when using the facilities, including during Friday prayers
  • access to the Faith Space in King George VI (KGVI) Building will be restricted to between 5:00am and 9:00pm only. This will be reviewed and amended in line with autumn prayer times
  • there will be enhanced security measures at KGVI, including a visible security and police presence where appropriate and particularly on Fridays
  • outdoor prayer activities will be suspended
  • large bags (e.g. uber/Just Eat bags) will not be permitted within the Faith Spaces

These measures have been agreed with Chaplaincy representatives and are being introduced to help protect the safety and wellbeing of all members of our University community. We appreciate the understanding, cooperation, feedback and support of students and colleagues as we work together to maintain a campus where everyone feels safe and supported.
