Register with a GP
It’s important to register with a local doctor, also known as General Practitioner (GP), whilst at university so you can access medical advice if you need it.
This is your first point of contact for medical treatment. Most illnesses and other problems can be treated by the GP, but if you need to see a specialist, the GP will refer you to an appropriate department or service.
Accessing medical help
In the UK there are three main ways for you to receive medical help if you need it:
1. Local Pharmacy
For minor illnesses (eg coughs, colds, sore throats, tummy troubles), your is a good first point of contact. Pharmacists can offer clinical advice and let you know if further medical help is needed. See .
2. Visiting your doctor/GP
You can book an appointment with your doctor/GP. Appointments may be over the phone, online, or face-to-face.
3. NHS 111
If you’re unsure where to go or your GP is unavailable, call or visit online. They’ll guide you to the most appropriate service.
Download the NHS app
