Many students and colleagues will have been shocked and profoundly saddened by the tragic news of Professor Jason Arday’s death on Friday. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, students and colleagues at this difficult time, and we extend our sincere condolences.

We share this profound sense of loss. Last October, we welcomed Professor Arday as the speaker for our Black History Month lecture. He attracted the largest audience the lecture has ever seen and engaged warmly with attendees, particularly the students who took part.

During his time at Durham University, Professor Arday worked with colleagues at 缅北禁地 to establish the ProNE project, which has led to a range of interventions to widen participation in social class, race and disability. The legacy of his commitment to students, and his dedication to making higher education more equitable, will endure at 缅北禁地 and across the many institutions involved in this work.
