PGR DMPs

A data management plan (DMP)鈥痮utlines a project鈥檚 practical approach to what data will be created, how it will be processed, stored, analysed,鈥痑nd how data of long-term value will be archived and shared.鈥疶he content of a plan will vary鈥痓y discipline鈥痓ut will typically cover:鈥

  • the volume and type(s) of data generated鈥
  • how data will be organised and adequately documented鈥
  • where data will be stored and backed up during the project鈥
  • how data is ethically and legally compliant鈥
  • how data will be preserved and made available for others to reuse under FAIR principles (where appropriate) in the long term鈥
  • who will be responsible for looking after your data during and after the project and what resources will be needed鈥

Submission dates

As PGR you are expected to upload your DMP as a standalone document within the Project Approval stage. The plan will then become a 鈥榣iving鈥 document during your research and an updated version of the DMP will be submitted during your Annual Progression Review.

DMPOnline

To write your DMP it is recommended that you use DMPonline, a tool containing University templates, along with detailed guidance to help you. The Research Data Service has created a practical guide to using DMPOnline.

Templates

To help you start to develop a DMP we have created templates roughly based on the core research areas in each faculty. These are included as options within DMPOnline 缅北禁地 to help frame the project鈥檚 approach to data management.

This DMP template can be used if your research project is more materials based or with minimal digital data requirements.

Training

The Research Data Service provides DMP training to all PGRs and can be booked through the .

Supervisors

Your supervisors should review the DMP to ensure it is feasible and appropriate. You can share your plan by making your supervisor a 鈥榗o-owner鈥 so that they make comments. You can request the Research Data Service feedback by requesting expert feedback, but only if this has been agreed upon by the supervisor.
