Developing Academic Skills in Partnership
The Academic Skills Team partners with academic colleagues across the University to support students in developing the skills they need to thrive in their studies. We work with you to create teaching that is relevant, practical, and closely connected to your module content and assessments. By integrating academic skills into the curriculum, we help students build confidence, strengthen their critical thinking, and become more independent learners. Whether students are adjusting to university study, preparing assessments, or undertaking research projects, our aim is to provide timely, meaningful support that enhances their learning experience.
The table below provides an overview of the broad topic areas we cover. These are not bolt-on, 'one size fits all' sessions. Instead, we collaborate with you to tailor core academic skills development to your students' needs, subject area, and learning outcomes. Criticality underpins everything we do, so you won't find it as a separate topic below. Whatever skills we focus on, we help students understand what criticality looks like in the context of their discipline and how they can demonstrate it more effectively in their work.

Working together allows us to create academic skills teaching that fits naturally within your module and responds to the needs of your students. To help us make the most of our partnership, it can be helpful to:
-
Engage with us in early dialogue to plan ahead for teaching and ensure our availability before timetabling a session.
-
Help us understand and target student learning needs by discussing with us key issues commonly arising in your assessment, or feedback from students.
-
Discuss with us the context of the session, where it sits in the programme/module/curriculum, when and how it is linked to assessment or learning outcomes
-
Work with us to embed a session at the optimal point in the module so that students can reflect on and put guidance into practice in a timely way in the context of their current work.
-
Provide samples of authentic text that we can use or adapt within the workshop to tailor to the level and discipline as appropriate.
-
Provide us with feedback on the impact of our provision on your students, enabling us to improve and refine our offer.
