About this workshop
This workshop explores the historic visit of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. to 缅北禁地 in November 1967, when he received an Honorary Doctorate in Civil Law, the only honorary degree awarded to him by a British university.
Using rare photographs and archival materials from his visit, students will examine the Civil Rights Movement through a unique North East perspective. Through the analysis of powerful images, students will investigate themes of equality, activism, leadership and social change, while developing critical thinking skills and an understanding of how photography shapes historical narratives.
This workshop can be extended to a full day with a walking tour of the different historical landmarks on the University campus and within the city centre.
