Aims
This module is designed to provide the advanced knowledge associated with the work based practical training in the diagnosis and management of respiratory and sleep disorders.
It will provide the students with the understanding of the theoretical aspects and an appreciation of the practical aspects of clinical exercise testing, ventilatory control & assessment and the management of complex sleep disorder.
Outline Of Syllabus
Structure, function, mechanics and control of the cardiorespiratory system at rest and during exercise
Field exercise testing
Cardiorespiratory responses to exercise
Exercise response in disease
Contraindications to exercise testing and safety during exercise tests
Recognition of indications to terminate the exercise test prematurely, e.g. symptoms
Common protocols used in cardiopulmonary exercise testing
Uses and limitations of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and its value in clinical practice
Application of various respiratory tests in the confirmation of disease
Awareness of clinical guidelines, e.g. NICE, ERS/ATS, COPD and asthma
Clinical report writing techniques
Pulmonary rehabilitation
Oxygen Therapy
Anatomy and physiology associated with normal sleep
Pathophysiology of non-respiratory sleep disorders
Tools, techniques and equipment used to assess and treat respiratory and neurological sleep disorders
Basic understanding of pharmacodynamics to underpin the understanding of how common prescribed and non-prescribed drugs may influence test findings

Teaching Rationale And Relationship
This knowledge is delivered via a series of lectures in the intensive face to face teaching week at the beginning of the academic year. This will be supplemented by small group teaching and directed reading, research and independent studies.
Students learn how to undertake project based learning in the workplace - this is delivered through lectures, directed reading, research and their independent study.
This is supplemented by directed reading and research as students gain more experience through their workplace- based learning.
Students will be given the opportunity for formative practice.

Assessment Rationale And Relationship
The examination provides an opportunity to assess the students’ acquisition of appropriate knowledge and their ability to present that knowledge in a written format. The exam also assesses the students’ critical understanding of clinical exercise testing, ventilatory control & assessment and the management of complex sleep disorder.
The written exercise provides further opportunities to summatively assess the student's understanding and knowledge and their ability to apply that knowledge in a practical and real sense which is relevant to their work place environment.
In order to pass this module candidates must achieve a mark of at least 50% in the written examination.
