Professional guidelines

Good practice at subject discipline level is defined in professional codes and guidelines. This can be found under Research Integrity webpage.

Funder guidelines

Most major funders have produced good research practice guidelines, including  and the . 

Medical Research Council (MRC)

The MRC provides free on good research practice, including working with human tissue and data protection. Registration is required to access materials. 

Health Research Authority (HRA)

 include working with human tissue, mental capacity, medical devices and the design of clinical trials. Registration is required to access materials. 

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

Some international universities have developed short Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) which provide an introduction to research integrity and ethics. Including the ,  and the .

As a member of UKRIO we currently have access to three dedicated courses, each focusing on a different aspect of research ethics and accessible individually.


  1. A four-module foundation exploring how ethical standards in research have evolved, why they matter, and how they guide responsible research from conception to dissemination.

  2. A course examining the ethical complexities of emotionally challenging or sensitive research, with a focus on risks and benefits for both participants and researchers.

  3. A course providing guidance on conducting research with children, focusing on ethical responsibilities and safeguarding considerations.
