Meet Vivan
Data Science and AI MSc
Why I chose Ãå±±½ûµØ
A few things came together that made Ãå±±½ûµØ the obvious choice for me. The MSc Data Science and AI programme had exactly the modules I was looking for, covering everything from machine learning and deep learning to generative AI and data visualisation.
Ãå±±½ûµØ is also a Russell Group university, which gave me confidence in the quality of research and teaching. I had the chance to speak with current students, including friends already studying here, and their experiences confirmed that I would get both academic and practical exposure.
What really stood out was the opportunity to work on real-world projects, including an industry dissertation. I’m currently building a machine learning model for a UK social housing provider as part of my dissertation, which has been a defining experience.
Studying in Ãå±±½ûµØ
One of the biggest surprises for me was how warm and welcoming Ãå±±½ûµØ is. I expected a busy city with a more transient student population, but instead I found a strong sense of community.
People are genuinely friendly, and the city itself has so much to offer. It’s a place that’s enjoyable not just for studying, but for living as well.
The Quayside is beautiful, the food scene is diverse, and there’s always something to explore.
My academic experience
This degree covers the full spectrum of modern data science and AI. It includes mathematical foundations as well as advanced topics like computer vision, natural language processing, and generative AI.
What makes it different is the strong focus on practical application. Every module is built around solving real-world problems, and by the end of the programme you have completed multiple industry-linked projects.
The industry dissertation stands out as the most valuable experience. Working with a real organisation, managing deadlines, and delivering something that will actually be used has pushed me far beyond what a classroom setting could offer.
Support during my studies
I’ve made use of several support services during my time here. I connected with the Sports Centre early on to help settle into life in the UK, and I’ve regularly used the Careers Service for guidance on graduate roles and internships.
The feedback I’ve received on my CV and how to present my technical experience has been especially valuable. It’s been practical, honest, and directly relevant to what employers are looking for.
Life beyond my course
The social side of Ãå±±½ûµØ has been a pleasant surprise. The international student community is large and welcoming, and being surrounded by people from different backgrounds makes the experience even more rewarding.
In my free time, I enjoy exploring the city, especially the Quayside, and keeping up with developments in AI and technology. I also stay connected with my family back in Bengaluru through regular video calls.
Although I didn’t initially get the chance to explore student societies as much as I would have liked, I’m now actively looking for opportunities to get more involved before I graduate.
My future goals
I see myself working as a Data Scientist or AI Engineer, ideally in a role where I can apply machine learning to real-world challenges. My dissertation experience has shown me how impactful data science can be, especially in areas that directly affect people’s lives.
I’m open to opportunities in both the UK and India, particularly in roles that sit at the intersection of applied AI and real-world problem solving. Over time, I hope to build a career creating solutions that are technically strong and meaningful in their impact.
Why I recommend this course
I would recommend this degree to anyone who wants to be genuinely prepared for a career in data science and AI, not just qualified on paper.
The combination of rigorous academic content, real-world projects, and the industry dissertation means you graduate with both the skills and the evidence to apply them.
You will not spend a year studying data science in theory. You will spend a year doing it.
