My favourite thing about life in Ãå±±½ûµØ
I really like that it’s a university campus right in the middle of the city, which is quite rare in the UK. All the university buildings are close together, but you’re also right in the city centre, so it’s easy to head into town between lectures. The Metro system is fantastic, easy to use and affordable with a student pass, and you can get to the coast in just 20 minutes. You definitely don’t need a car to get around.
Employability support that makes me ready for the future
We’ve had guest lectures from alumni who share their career journeys, which has been helpful in exploring different options.
I’ve also developed skills in data visualisation, presenting to clients, and gained a better understanding of how consultancies operate.
A representative from Arup gave a talk, and it opened my eyes to a career path I hadn’t previously considered. This led me to spending some time with them over summer where I worked on real projects within their AI and data team.
Feeling supported at Ãå±±½ûµØ
There are three main points of contact: your stage tutor, academic tutor, and peer mentor, so there’s always someone available depending on the type of support you need. It’s reassuring to know you have people you can approach, whether your query is academic, technical, or personal. The open-door policy makes this accessible. There’s also dedicated school wellbeing support, which is great to know is there if needed.
The transition officer was particularly helpful, especially the weekly Sunday emails that clearly outlined upcoming deadlines and key information.
What I enjoy outside of my studies
I had never played or even heard of lacrosse before coming to university, but I decided to give it a try after seeing it on the list of societies. I went along to a taster session, really enjoyed it, and got involved from there. Now I’m the president of the and compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) league, which has been an amazing experience.
My advice to prospective students
I’d say don’t worry too much about working over the summer before you start university. You’ll be working hard once term begins, so it’s important to enjoy your break. The induction week and the support available help ease you back into studying maths, so you’ll feel prepared and ready to learn.
